In 1985, the Evidence Technician Unit was formed under one unit commander, departing from the old method of having Evidence Technicians assigned to each squad throughout the city.  They started with 21 Evidence Technicians and two sergeants.  Within the first year, seven additional Evidence Technicians were added.  Today, the unit known as the Crime Scene Unit, is staffed by 27 Evidence Technicians, three sergeants, and one commanding officer.

We respond to all types of crime scenes, from very simple to very complicated incidents. Major Case Evidence Technicians receive special training to handle high profile cases. When a homicide, police shooting, or any other major incident occurs, at least one Major Case Evidence Technician responds and takes charge of the crime scene processing under the supervision of one of the Crime Scene Unit's three sergeants.

Especially since the O. J. Simpson Trial, the scrutiny placed on the evidence collection procedures, has never been greater.  New detection equipment is coming out almost everyday, as well as new collection methods.  We have the most modern equipment available, including an Alternate Light Source (A.L.S.), an Electrostatic Dust Print Lifter (DELK UNIT), and a Forensic Mapping System (Laser Impulse measuring device).
