What is a brownfield?
Brownfields are defined as "real property," the expansion, redevelopment
or reuse of which is complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. 

What is our mission?
To develop a self-sustaining model program for identification, assessment, remediation, and redevelopment of brownfield sites. To raise awareness of business owners, developers, landowners, and lenders regarding economic incentives and innovative financing mechanisms for redevelopment. To bring citizens, environmental regulatory agencies, consultants, developers, landowners, and lenders to the table to redevelop Brownfield sites. To promote community education and communication. To assess and help resolve other barriers to urban redevelopment such as zoning and permitting criteria, level of trained workers, crime, etc.

How to participate in the Brownfields Program?
If the property is inside the designated Brownfields Area, the property owner needs to write the Brownfields office requesting inclusion into the program (please see our map on this website).  The map shows defined boundaries of the Enterprise Zone which share the same boundaries as the Brownfields Designated Area.  If the property is outside the designated Brownfields Area, Florida Statutes allow for these properties to be designated as Brownfields by resolution through City Council.  These properties must meet the requirements of FS 376.80(2)(b) to be considered for Brownfields designation.  Please refer to www.flsenate.gov/statutes/index.cfm TitleXXVIII Natural Resources; Conservation, Reclamation, and Use for more information or contact our office.
