Fire Prevention Division

Investigator at a fire scene.The Fire Prevention Division annually conducts about 10,000 fire safety inspections of commercial buildings such as hotels, apartment buildings and shopping centers to ensure they meet state fire codes.

The division also reviews plans for proposed commercial buildings to ensure they will be built in compliance with fire codes.  The division reviews drawings for about 4,100 proposed apartments, hotels and other commercial buildings a year.

Girl learns firefighting at safety fair.Investigators with the Fire Prevention Division investigate the cause of about 450 fires a year, including all those involving a death as well as any for which fire fighters on the scene are unable to determine a cause.

In 2007, the division offered 602 programs to schools and community groups, providing fire safety information to 46,195 people in Jacksonville.

Fire Prevention also provides and installs free smoke detectors. Each year, the division installs about 600 to 700 smoke detectors.

The Fire Prevention Division has 27 employees and is under the direction of Chief Anthony L. Roseberry.
